KIERAN Gething was pleased as punch to scoop a prestigious British Boxing Board of Control Award on the weekend.

Gething won the Welsh Area Council Award for Contest of the Year following his bout against Welsh Champion Tony Dixon last October.

Dixon (11-2) just edged Gething (6-2-1) to a 95-94 points defeat following a barnstorming encounter that went the distance and gave Dixon the belt.

The Gething V Dixon match just pipped Gavin Gwynne v Myron Mills for the fight of the year, and Gething couldn’t be prouder.

“I’m really happy about receiving the award and I hope to be up there again next year, collecting the same award and adding boxer of the year, god willing.”

Gething will of course have a second bite of a Welsh title cherry this Saturday (February 2) in Newport when he squares up against Cardiff’s Henry Janes.

It’ll be Gething’s first time back in the ropes since the Dixon fight, and this time he’s determined not to leave without a belt.

And if you fancy a bit of pre-fight build-up there’ll be a weigh-in at the amber lounge in Newport’s Rodney Parade this Friday at 2pm.
