ABERGAVENNY Squash Club’s ‘B’ team completed their season on a high note by doing a ‘Wigan!’ Having been relegated at the end of the season, they were able to finish their cup campaign by winning their final by three matches to two in a hard-fought match against Monmouth ‘A’ at Newport Squash Club.
The team was fittingly led to victory by captain Gary Lawrence, who won a crucial match against a much younger opponent by three sets to two. The team was down by two matches to one, and, although out on his feet, Gary used all his experience to outwit his opponent, and bring the match level.
As a result, his son, Ellis Lawrence, was given the opportunity to win the match, which he did with alacrity, showing all facets of his ability to beat a difficult and experienced opponent by three sets to one.
Earlier in the match, Mike Logan had set the tone by winning his match convincingly three sets to nil, but then the team faltered, with both Carl Whiteman and Mitchell Lawrence losing their matches. However, all’s well that ends well!
