Abertysswg RFC - 21
Abergavenny RFC - 28
IN their first ever encounter with Abertysswg, Abergavenny secured a well deserved victory to go fourth in the league.
The clarets made a few changes from the previous week. Ieuan James returned to join Staphnil and Morgan in the front row, Luke Williams came in to partner Dan Horler in the second row and Josh Hitchman returned to the back row.
Dan Smith returned to partner Gareth Beavan in the centre and Wil Williams dropped to full back. Abergavenny's half backs Rhob Connick and Rhodri Webster used the wind to great effect to give Abergavenny a foothold in opposition territory. The Falcons were soon reduced to 14 men when their scrum half was yellow carded for foul play and Abergavenny went 3-0 up with a penalty by Rhodri Webster.
With a numerical advantage Abergavenny stretched Abertysswg's defence, moving the ball well for number eight Mark Squirell to score an unconverted try, 8-0.
The home side were once again reduced to 14 men when their number eight was yellow carded after a fracas, but this appeared to galvanise the home side up and for the next 15 minutes they took the game to Abergavenny.
Abertysswg scored two well taken tries both converted to give them a 14-8 lead and if scrum half Rhob Connick had not earned a turn over penalty it could well have been three tries before half time.
Into the second-half and Abergavenny's scrum was now totally dominant and giving the home side's pack a torrid time. After two scrum penalties close to the Falcons' line the referee lost patience and awarded Abergavenny a penalty try converted by Rhodri Webster, who also kicked a penalty to give Abergavenny a 18-14 lead.
From a line-out Abergavenny drove the lineout over for flanker Josh Davies to touch down, 23-14.
Wil Williams broke through the home side defence to score an unconverted try to give Aber the bonus point and with time running out Abertysswg threw everything into attack and managed to break through Aber's defence to score a converted try in the last minute.
On Friday night Abergavenny play Tredegar away with a 7.15pm kick off.
