ABERGAVENNY CC's second XI slumped to another defeat in dreary conditions against a visiting Panteg side.

After the overnight rain, it was questionable whether the game would go ahead. The drizzle held off, so play got under way on time. Panteg won the toss and Abergavenny were inserted on a damp, green and drying wicket.

Openers Knight and Kinman not only had to endure the wicket but the very reliable Panteg opening partnership of Martin and Francis. The partnership was broken when Knight (4) was caught behind by Francis, and Griffiths soon departed being trapped LBW without troubling the scorers.

It was left to the zimmer frame brigade to rebuild the Aber innings which they did and managed to get the score to 37 before the next wicket. Two runs later they lost another vital wicket and the innings was teetering on 39 for four.

A partnership between Scott Greaves (19) and Ryland Wallace managed to limp the score to 91 before the partnership was broken, and Wallace (40) was out soon after leaving the innings on 92 for six.

Craig Whistance (16) and Mike Devoy (19) managed to get the total to 140 before Aber wer all out in the 42nd over.

After the tea interval and the prep talk in the changing room, Aber set the task to get the Pantegs' wickets early but their openers' intention was to get the game completed before any further chance of rain.

The breakthrough came when Devoy trapped McLaren LBW for 26, with the score on 82. It was now time for the skipper Andy Timpson to introduce himself to the attack with his bouncy run up and his zest for getting wickets, which he did, claiming three for 29 off eight overs. However, the Panteg batsman completed the run chase in the 30th Over.

Overall a very disappointing day for Abergavenny who only claimed three points from the match, and they will need all their players to bring their 'A' game next week for the important away game against fellow strugglers Radyr.
