USK CC did the double over Abergavenny on the weekend with both their first and second team taking the Beavers’ scalps.
On Saturday, at the Athletic Club Ground, Abergavenny skipper, Gavin Heritage won the toss and elected to bat. Despite the loss of an early wicket with the score at 15, G. Leach (20) and T. Zafar (135) took the score up to 88 before Leach fell.
The visitors then suffered a mini-collapse as they struggled to 121-4; however, Zafar remained at the crease. A. Astley-Jones (42) joined Zafar to add 85 for the fifth wicket. Zafar batted through to the end, being dismissed off the final ball of the innings. Abergavenny closed on 265-7 from their 50 overs. Zafar’s innings contained four sixes and 14 fours. For Usk, Hywel Rose, Gabriel Warwick and Ollie James each bagged a brace.
Usk’s reply got off to a good start as Owen Wakins (43) and George Lewis (40) putting on 88 for the first wicket within the first 13 overs. Both then fell within quick succession, and when Usk lost two further wickets, the hosts found themselves 141-4 with a little under 20 overs to score the remaining 125 runs.
James (81) and Warwick (44) then shared a fifth wicket stand of 101 to put Usk within touching distance of victory. Each fell with a few overs to go. The equation then boiled down to 11 required from the last over with three wickets in hand.
Jason Cook, who has guided Usk home on several occasions this year, stepped away to the offside and three times unerringly hit the ball through square leg; twice to the boundary, and once for a couple.
This brought the scores level with three balls remaining. From the fourth ball of the over, Cook was bowled: one still needed, two wickets in hand. From the penultimate ball of the innings Greg Peacock, laid bat on ball and sprinted through for the winning run.
At Avenue Road, Usk completed the double over Abergavenny as the seconds chased down their target with Herbie Bone scoring a second 50 of the season. Earlier in the day, Jack Turner had picked up four wickets for Usk.
The following day at Usk the seconds hosted Brecon in the T20 competition. Despite losing they still made the final of the T20
On Saturday, Usk firsts are away to Radyr, with the seconds entertaining the same opponents. Both games begin at 1:30pm. The following day, the Sunday XI are away to Chepstow. Play for this game commences at 2pm.
