THE Three Peaks challenge is a demanding trek for the most seasoned hiker, but who would want to run the famous 'Gold Route' two times in the same day?
Abergavenny girl Shelly Kelly does and is determined to raise as much money for charity as possible in the process.
Walkers have been walking the walk, running the run and covering the circular 20 miles of the Three Peaks challenge for over 50 years, but to date no-one who has scaled the triple majesty of the Blorenge, Sugarloaf and Skirrid twice in the same day before.
Shelly told the Chronicle, "I have participated in the Three Peaks challenge many times in the past and am familiar with the route, so this time I thought why not really challenge myself and do it twice!"
During the trek, Shelly will be raising money for Cancer Research - a charity very close to her heart.
The endurance runner explained, "Two years ago my sister Julie had a stroke and was later diagnosed with lung cancer.
"Following her course of chemotherapy, she's doing really well and is awaiting her scan results to see if she has to undergo further treatment."
However, it isn't just her sister's plight that has motivated Shelly to do what she can to raise money for Cancer Research.
Shelly revealed, "I have known and still know many people who developed cancer at some point in their lives. Thankfully, some have won the battle, but sadly, some have lost the fight. Yet I believe each and every one of them is an inspiration to us all.
"I think that if my sister can keep going in the face of all life has thrown at her, then the least I can do is help by raising money whilst doing the very thing I love - running in the mountains."
If you would like to sponsor Shelly, then you can find her in Abergavenny's Gregg's. She would be very grateful for any donations you might like to make.
