Crickhowell FC - 2 Blaenavon Blues - 1
CRICKHOWELL FC laid claim to their first bit of silverware in over ten years when they defeated the Blaenavon Blues in last Sunday's Langdon Cup Final. Played in humid conditions at Pen-y-Pound, Crick started the stronger of the two sides with a dynamic early forward run from Alex Aitken resulting in an exquisite finish from Craig Thomas. Blaenavon played a direct game and kept pressing but the Crickhowell back four stood firm, well marshalled by keeper Gavin Baynton. Half time allowed Crickhowell manager Graham Rees the opportunity to rally his men and once again Crickhowell came out of the blocks with a real bite about their play. After just 65 minutes the ball sat up for Jonathan Nash to stroke the ball home and double Crickhowell's advantage. The Blues applied the pressure for the remainder of the second half and were justly rewarded with a goal from Darren Harris. Blaenavon continued to press mounting multiple attacks on the Crickhowell goal but to no avail. When the final whistle blew the cup had Crick's name on it. Club chairman Huw Morgans said, "It's been a fantastic season for all connected with the club and to finally get our hands on silverware after ten years is a real achievement. The boys deserve the rewards for all the hard work and endeavours. Hopefully we won't have to wait another 10 years for more success." Crickhowell's captain Nick Francis was also named Gwent Central Division One player of the season, a deserved accolade for the Crick veteran. Crickhowell FC will be holding their annual presentation evening this Saturday at the Corn Exchange Crickhowell, 7pm, and their AGM, June 20, at the same venue.
