GLANGRYWNEY’S Cricket Club’s season finale took place at Cwrt-y-Gollen when the Presidents’ XI took on the Chairmans’ XI.

The occasion involved much more than the cricket match, with many friends and sponsors present for an excellent tea during an extended break between innings.

The main reason for the gathering was to witness the unveiling of a memorial bench dedicated to Gwyn Williams who sadly passed away earlier in the year.

Chairman Eddie Harding was pleased to see so many present to pay tribute to Gwyn and his stalwart service to the club.

Williams was a player for about 50 years and also took on each of the officer roles within the club at various times.

In recent times he was an invaluable member of the ground maintenance team but still remained keen to play during the 2015 season, when he was in his 78th year.

Eddie asked Kirsty Williams AM to assist Gwyn’s wife Marian (pictured) in unveiling the bench in his memory. Kirsty congratulated the club on its continuing progress with the development of Cwrt-y-Gollen as a prime venue for Cricket.

She stressed the importance to those of all ages to remain active and praised the club for providing the opportunity for community participation.

The unveiling of the bench was witnessed by over 40 friends including Gwyn’s son, daughter, and their families.

Before tea the Chairmans’ team had racked up a total of 199 in 35 overs. After tea, President Jim Devoy’s team fell short, reaching 165 all out in fading light.

So the curtain comes down on another successful season for Glangrwyney Cricket Club with everyone looking forward to 2017.

Further ground improvements are planned for the autumn to enhance the playing facilities at Cwrt-y-Gollen. Anyone wishing to get involved please contact [email protected].
