Abergavenny CC’s First X1 were home to Chepstow in a League and Welsh Cup ‘double header’ on the weekend.

Chepstow batted first in a reduced 30 overs per side. Abergavenny were on top throughout the Chepstow innings, and bowlers Sam Clarke (3-23), Geraint Leach (3-11) and Dan Cooke (2-13) were very impressive. Adam Harrison also chipped in with one wicket.

In reply, Aber did not make a good fist of chasing the relatively low score and fell victim to Malith Madurasinghe who cut through the top order, taking four wickets in a couple of overs, including skipper Will Glen (11), which saw Abergavenny struggling at 29-5 in the 17th over.

Greg Fury (28) and Adam Harrison (129 not out) showed some spirit but it was too little too late and Abergavenny were disappointedly bowled out for 75 runs, which was a massive blow to their hopes for this season.

The Second X1 meanwhile were away at Pontypridd and were disappointedly bowled out for just 84 runs in 24 overs.

Only four players reached double figures - Gareth Powell (20), Drew Hefferman (16), Skipper Steve Brown (13), and Richard James (10).

There was only one substantial partnership of 30 runs (Gareth Powell/Drew Hefferman) and between the score of 63 and 65, Aber lost four wickets.

The damage was done by Lee Parry and Rhys Lacey with 7-28 between them. The Third X1’s fixture with Barry was cancelled.
