ABERGAVENNY CC’s First X1 were away to Miskin Manor and suffered a disappointing loss.

Abergavenny won the toss and chose to bat first, as the weather dictated that the game was reduced to 45 overs per side.

Contrary to wisdom it looked a reasonable decision as skipper Will Glenn and Andrew Jones once again got the team off to a great start making 133 runs for the first wicket.

With Jones out for a magnificent 81, Morgan Bevans (13), who will skipper Wales Under 17 next week against Northampton, took the score to 159-2.

Following Glenn’s (69) departure with the score on 183, things went quickly downhill as Abergavenny lost six wickets for just 31 runs to leave them with a disappointing final score of 214 -8.

Man of the Match and Miskin skipper Daniel Hay took 6-29.

With the outfield exposed to the wind and sun giving Miskin better value for their shots,

Abergavenny needed to make early in-roads and to a certain extent did just that as they reduced Miskin to 28-2 and 107-4. However, that was as much as they could manage and Miskin’s star bowler, Daniel Hay, became the star batsman as he finished on 98 not out. Miskin passed their target with two overs and six wickets to spare. Abergavenny spin twins Sam Clarke and Ben Davies took 2-67 between them in their 18 overs. This was a body blow for Abergavenny promotion hopes especially with leaders Chepstow losing to Monmouth CC.

The Second X1 were at home to League Five leaders Abercynon First X1, who won the toss and inserted Abergavenny.

Aber did get to 103 for two at one stage and it looked like a score in excess of 200 was possible. Runs from skipper Steve Brown (55), his highest score of the season, and 35 from young Tom Pipe ensured a good base but they fell away a little despite the efforts of Nathan Holley (34 not out). They finished on 198 for seven after their 45 overs.

In reply Abergavenny made some early in roads into the Abercynon batsmen with Geraint Leach making his seasonal appearance for the Second X1, opening the bowling and taking three for 39 off his nine overs. Dylan Beaumont-Welsh also bowled well with 1-29 from his nine overs. The skipper himself took some late wickets, 2-28, but this was not enough to prevent Abercynon winning in the 42nd over by four wickets to complete the double over Abergavenny.
