Abergavenny CC’s third team have gone top of Marches League Division Three as they convincingly beat Ledbury seconds at Crickhowell Cricket Ground.
Ledbury won the toss and decided to bat as the visitors made a confident start. Tom Griffiths made the first breakthrough of the match with a diving catch off his own bowling. Richard Monnington struck in the next over with a caught behind by new wicket keeper Ashley Curtis. Griffiths then bowled the number four batsman, Owain Bradley claimed a lbw and Josh Knapp caught a stunner at cover off the bowling of Dan Bowden, leaving Ledbury struggling at 75-5 off 22 overs.
Ledbury slightly recovered with some good lower order hitting to post 180. Bradley returned to take another couple of wickets and off spinner Lewys McCarthy was very unlucky to only take one wicket in his impressive nine over spell.
With rain approaching and thunderstorms forecasted, Aber tried to get their innings off in a positive fashion. John Cole was the first wicket to go for 11 and all rounder Griffiths didn’t last long either, being bowled for eight.
But the experienced pair of Jon Lamont and Mark Winstanley had no problems dispatching the Ledbury bowlers to the boundary at regular intervals.
Lamont was dismissed for a well made 50, bringing Ross Hayden to the crease. He hung around while Winstanley continued hitting the ball to every part of the ground.
Wicket Keeper Curtis, in his first senior match for the club, replaced Hayden to see the match out, scoring 28 not out, with Winstanley 73 not out, as Aber won by six wickets with more than 12 overs remaining
This Saturday the team make the long trip to Eastnor fourths in the League and on Sunday they are again away as they play Talybont-on-Usk in the Marches League Cup.
