Abergavenny CC started their pre-season preparations by entertaining Worcestershire League team Wormelow CC at Avenue Road on Sunday.
Abergavenny fielded a youthful side and batted first on a slow deck but were thankful to be out in the middle after the poor weather of late.
Abergavenny scored 211-6 off their 40 overs. Lee Fury topped the scoring with 47, while Lewis Holley got 38 and new signing David Clarke contributed 33.
It was a good workout for the batters to spend some time in the middle, yet frustrating no one went on to get a big score, as the Wormelow bowlers bowled some probing lines and were backed up with some very good fielding.
In reply Wormelow got off to a good start ,with their Australian import L. Hartley retiring on 101 as he hit through the line of anything he could. Although Abergavenny struck at important times it was Wormelow’s other overseas player J. Worsely who saw them home with 61 not out to help Wormelow to a six wicket win.
For Abergavenny, Ben Pike claimed 1-29, while Sam Clarke bowled a good spell of 1-38 off eight overs and David Clarke took 1-45 off his eight overs.
Overall it was a good workout for the young side and it was good to purge some of the rustiness after a long winter of practicing indoors at Ebbw Vale.
The next set of pre-season matches take place at Avenue Road this weekend with Aberdare visiting on Saturday April 16, and Cheltenham Civil Service visiting on Sunday April 19.
Training continues every week with Seniors practicing on Tuesday from 6pm and Youth training on Friday at 6pm. Please contact [email protected] or contact them on Twitter @AbergavennyCC if anymore information is required.
