Croesyceiliog RFC - 20
Abergavenny RFC - 3
ABERGAVENNY travelled to Croesyceiliog on the weekend on the back of five league wins, but came down to earth with a bump at Heywood road.
Abergavenny fielded a mostly unchanged team with only Josh Hitchman coming in for CJ Woodhouse and Sam Vaughan replacing Rhob Connick at scrum half. The home side came out firing on all cylinders and from a driving maul in the third minute scored an unconverted try to lead 5-0.
For the first quarter of the game the Cockerels dominated a very disjointed Aber side and only stout defence from the away side stopped them scoring again.
Abergavenny seemed to compose themselves and began to exert some pressure on the Croesy side, eventually being rewarded with a penalty kicked by Rhodri Webster.
The clarets continued to press the home team and came very close to scoring from several driving line-outs and an attempted push over try but nothing seemed to be going right for the Abergavenny side as knock-ons and dropped passes seemed to be the order of the day.
With the last play of the first half Abergavenny turned over a Croesy line-out throw only for the ball to ricochet into the hands of a Croesy player who went over unopposed for a try to make the half-time score 12-3.
The second half saw Abergavenny dominate in terms of possession and territory but unforced errors and a resolute home defence kept the visitors from adding any further points. A penalty goal from the Croesy outside half stretched their lead to 15-3, and even though the Abergavenny scrum was now completely dominant they failed to turn pressure into points.
In the closing seconds of the game Croesy scored another try from a driving line-out to leave the final score 20-3.
After their recent run of good results this was a very disappointing performance from Abergavenny, which they will be looking to improve on when they play at home to Caerphilly next Saturday. The one positive thing to come out of this game was the performance of flanker Josh Davies who was far the best player in the Abergavenny team.
