LAST weekend Abergavenny and Hereford hockey clubs met in the fifth annual mixed hockey match to commemorate ex-chair Jenny Stokes, who passed away in 2012.

This season the clubs decided to mix things up, with each team made up of players from both clubs. This resulted in a well-matched affair with plenty of action and a result in the balance right to the very end, with a final score of 5-4.

A club spokesperson said, “Jenny was a huge driving force behind the club we know and love today. Chairperson for many years, she shared her wealth of experience with the club and was instrumental in unifying the previously separate Mens and Ladies clubs, forging one unified hockey committee in the town, and campaign for the provision of the Astroturf. Prior to her time at Abergavenny she had played for both England and Great Britain, including being part of the England World Cup winning squad of 1966.

“Jenny’s son Giles started his playing days at Abergavenny and is now a key member of Hereford Hockey Club, so the annual get together is a natural choice to celebrate and commemorate Jenny’s life.”

Played in top spirits on a fantastic late summer afternoon, this was a match fitting of the occasion. Abergavenny Leisure Centre provided the pitch and players made generous donations totalling £220 to Giles’ chosen charity Macmillan Cancer Support.
