ABERGAVENNY netball club started the season with a strong 'A' team squad including; Amanda Leaker, Jess Davies, Amy Miller, Siobhan MacQuillan (captain), Ffion Edwards, Andrea Prosser, Kelly Morris, Barbara Owen, and Deb Gwilliam. Disappointingly the first few games of the season were postponed due to further issues with the netball court floor at Cwmbran Stadium.
The first game on September 23 saw Abergavenny 'A' play Ystrad 'A', who had the advantage of already playing three matches this season.
Aber started well with the first quarter going point for point. Excellent speedy attack from Ystrad secured goals against determined defence from Jess Smith, Amanda Leaker, and Amy Miller. In the second quarter Ystrad extended their lead.
Siobhan MacQuillan came on as centre and did much to add to the pace of an already fast game and complimented Fi Edwards in picking up interceptions in mid court. At the end of the third quarter and into the fourth Abergavenny were fighting to ensure they got half points.
Ystrad zone marked the attacking circle and their excellent Goal Defence Brooke Collett caused huge challenge for attacking play. Goal attack Kelly Morris didn't give up despite a nasty fall. Strong motivation and team spirit ensured that although Ystrad won, 44-22, Aber still bagged their share of the points.
Captain's player of the match was Kelly Morris.
On September 30, Abergavenny 'A' played Newport 'A' and suffered their second loss of the season in a keenly fought contest.
Established attackers Andrea Prosser, Siobhan MacQuillan and Kelly Morris again had a challenging time in getting past excellent defence. Barbara Owen shot accurately under pressure when she got the opportunity.
Newport had a tall goal shoot enabling high and direct passes to set up successful goals - Aber's Amanda Leaker, Amy Miller, Jess Davies and Debbie Gwilliam demonstrated real commitment in attempting to intercept and defend. At half time Newport had a considerable lead and Abergavenny changed the team combination in an attempt to foil Newport's attack.
Aber did pick up the game slowing up play to tactically attack the shooting circle which did increase the ratio of goals against Newport.
Despite good accurate court play Newport's lead couldn't be caught and the final score was 54-24.
Areas of improvement have been identified and coach Stuart Stenhouse has plans for Thursday's training session. Player of the Match was Siobhan MacQuillan and Captain's Player Andrea Prosser.
