ON a very wet muddy Saturday afternoon Abergavenny were undone up top by Brynmawr.

Once again due to injuries and unavailability Aber were unable to field any regular second rows, and this is having a detrimental effect on the clarets' game.

The game was played in freezing conditions with a howling gale blowing across the pitch.

Brynmawr had the better of the earlier exchanges and were awarded a penalty which the outside converted to give them a 3-0 lead.

Abergavenny responded well and after some good driving forward play prop forward Ryan Morgan was driven over for a try, Lewis Evans converted from the touchline.

Some very slack play in the middle of the park and some not existent tackling allowed Brynmawr to run the ball from their own 10 yard line and some good handling in the conditions allowing them to score a try. The conversion was missed leaving the score 8-7 to the home side.

The weather became progressively worse and the rugby was not much better and at the onset of a severe hailstorm, the referee took both teams off the field to shelter in the stand. When play resumed Brynmawr increased their lead with a penalty in front of the posts to leave the half time score 11-7 to Brynmawr.

The second half was very similar as the first with the homeside's pack slightly on top with Aber only able to dominate in the scrummage. As the weather deteriorated the heavier Brynmawr pack managed the conditions better than Abergavenny and were able to score a try close to the posts, which was converted to give them an 18-7 victory.

Abergavenny now have a fortnight off due to the Six Nations games but resume fixtures on February 15 with a fourth round cup fixture away to Amman United.
