Gwernyfed RFC - 30
Abergavenny RFC - 19
ABERGAVENNY travelled to Talgarth to face Gwernyfed in the first of three encounters between the two clubs this this season and any chance the clarets had of producing a hat-trick of wins were nipped in he bud.
Despite securing only two victories from seven starts this season, Aber have collected a string of losing bonus points from a series of narrow defeats to keep them off the bottom of the table.
With the side suffering from a number of injuries and commitments to senior players they knew the game against Gwernyfed would be a real challenge.
Stuart Davies returned to the midfield to lift the side after recovering from an ankle injury three weeks ago that was not as serious as first thought but Aber faced a determined home team with fire in their bellies and the visiting pack were on the back foot throughout the game.
It is often up front where the game is won and lost and this was certainly so here as Aber struggled to contain the home scrum and the line-outs failed to function effectively.
Despite the home sides dominance which included four tries all scored from forwards, two from push over tries and two from driving mauls, Aber were in the game with a 25-19 score line near the end of the game. This was thanks to the boot of scrum half Lewis Evans and two tries from strike runners Stuart Davies and Will Williams in the backs.
A little more ball from the pack could have teased further tries from the backs, but it was not to be and Gwernyfed ran out deserved winners 30-19.
More efforts are required in training to raise the bar to meet Risca at home next Saturday who have made a confident start to this season and lay in fifth position. Kick Off at Bailey Park is 2.30pm.
