ABERGAVENNY'S Owain Davies helped the Wales U14 Chess team to a historic win in the annual four nations home championships held in Coventry last week.

This was the first national title for wales at any age group. The Tournament consisted of teams of six players each playing six four hour matches over three days.

Wales started strongly comfortably beating tournament favorites England and Ireland on the first day. They struggled on the second day drawing with Scotland and losing to Ireland.

The final day saw Wales in second place after a narrow defeat to England, but a superb final round victory over Scotland saw them edge first place by 20 points to Scotland's 19.

Owain won two and drew three of his six matches in what was a great team effort.

Qwain is member of the Abergavenny chess club and has been greatly helped in his success by the coaching and support he has received from Richard Miles and the other members of the club.
