GLANGRWYNEY cricket club recently held their annual dinner at the Bear Hotel, Crickhowell where almost 40 members and friends enjoyed an evening celebrating a double success for the club. Chairman, Eddie Harding, spoke of the momentous decision to move to a new ground at Cwrt-y-Gollen 12 months ago and the months of hard work to successfully bring the disused ground into a playable condition for season 2013.
Work to the former Army base cricket pavilion enabled league cricket to commence in May. Mr Harding acknowledged the continuing support from landlord Ross Murray of Crickhowell Estates.
Club President, Jim Devoy, presented awards for the season to the following players.
Batting Award – Mike Parker.
Bowling Award – Tom Miller.
Young Player Award – Richard James.
Fielding Award – Mike Parker.
Silver Plate for scoring century – Mike Parker (2), Nick Jones, Tim Jones.
Silver Plate for five wickets in innings – Tom Miller.
The Marches League Division Four Winners Shield was on display and the captain Colin Griffiths was congratulated on the success of taking the club to the title on the last day of the season by the narrowest of margins.
The President spoke of his pleasure at seeing several younger players taking part and hoped more would follow in 2014 and form the backbone of the team in years to come.
The Chairman paid tribute to the assistance from John Hooper of Gwent Garden Designs in getting the cricket square into playable condition and finally to Steve Hindmarsh of the Bear Hotel, not only for the excellent meal and service, but for his sponsorship of playing shirts over the last two seasons.
