Climbing to the summit of Kilimanjaro is a tough ask at the best of times, but try tackling a large proportion of that mount barefoot and you’ve got an epic challenge on your hands.

That’s the task which Abergavenny man Brad Williams has set himself for this June and he’s doing it in a bid to raise money for Barnardo’s.

Barefoot Brad said, “When I climb Kilimanjaro, 6000 steps a day will be done barefoot. This is 1000 steps each for the nations of Wales, England, Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall and the Isle of Man.”

And the plucky fundraiser is not doing it because he’s some sort of deranged masochistic, but because he wants to highlight the myriad issues caused by poverty in Britain.

Brad explained, “This challenge is to symbolise how difficult life can be for young people, that have to deal with relative poverty in the UK. Even something so small like not having footwear, can be painful and make life so much harder and more of a struggle to succeed.”

Brad aims to hit a target of £500 and will be eternally grateful for any sponsorship from Chronicle readers
