GILWERN’s lady bowlers completed their league season with trips to Crickhowell and Merthyr West End, but suffered defeat in both.
At Crickhowell, they managed a victory on one rink, but lost on the other two to miss out 56-34.
The one success was the rink of Jill Howell as they took control over the final third of the game to win 16-11.
Pam Healy’s rink was outplayed after the first seven ends, losing 25-11, and Anne Konieczny’s rink could not get into the game, losing 20-7.
A much better result was achieved in the second game at Merthyr West End, where Gilwern won on one rink tied another and lost on the final rink, losing the game by only five points, 48-43.
The winning rink was that of Bonnie Bowhay, who took control from the start to run out 20-5 victors.
Jill Howells’ rink led by ten shots with four ends left, but then conceded their lead to tie 16 all, while Pam Healy’s rink was never in contention, losing 27-7.
The men’s East Monmouthshire BA team hosted Caldicot in mid-week.
Although losing narrowly on three rinks, such was the margin of victory on the final rink that it enabled Gilwern to post a 75-61 victory.
Bryant Chivers’ rink never allowed their opponents into the game, winning 28-9.
Other rink scores were Mike Fulton 17-19, Richard Davis 14-15 and Mark Wells 16-18.
On Saturday, the Monmouthshire BA team travelled to Oakdale Welfare, but won on one rink only, losing 87-59.
The only success was Mark Wells’ rink as they took control in the second half to win 27-10.
Other rink scores were Tony Corfield 13-17, Bryant Chivers 8-28 and Richard Davis 11-32.
Sunday afternoon saw a much-anticipated mixed friendly against Brecon Bowls Club.
Each team was successful on two rinks with Brecon gaining the upper hand, winning the game 72-56.
The next game for the men is an MBA fixture at Firbank on August 29.
