Abergavenny Bowls Club’s Matthew Vale and Gethin Hill represented Wales in the UK Championship’s Open Pairs but were unfortunately drawn against the red-hot favorites - England.

In cold and wet conditions the Abergavenny pair could not get a foothold in the game as the England duo seemed to have answers to any questions asked of them. Their precision bowling eventually led to a comfortable victory. They then went on to beat Scotland in the final claim the crown.

The previous Saturday the MBA team travelled to Croesyceiliog. They won on one rink but lost on the other three rinks by two shots on each rink, to lose the game by two shots. The winning rink was that of Matthew Vale who won by four shots despite a determined fight-back over the final four ends by the home rink. The other rinks of John Vale, Anthony Moriarty and Gethin Hill all lost by the same two shot margin.

Abergavenny Ladies have played three games in the past two weeks. The first of these at Gardiffaith They were victorious on the rink of Mary Evans. Despite their lead being diminished towards the end they won comfortably by 20 shots to 13. Gwynneth Langley’s rink was all square with one end to play. Unfortunately the Garndiffaith rink then scored two shots to win by 12 shots to 10. Sian Phillips rink could never get into their game and lost by 21 shots to eight.

Last Saturday the Ladies welcomed a team from Pontyfelin for a rearranged league game. Unfortunately all three rinks were well beaten and the match was lost by 71 shots to 28.

This weekend the MBA side welcome Caerleon to Avenue Road for a league game and on Sunday entertain Caldicot for an EMBA game.
