IT was Finals Day at Abergavenny Bowls Club the weekend before last.

In the Ladies 7 Up match Mary Evans took control of the game from the start. Her opponent Ann Whomersley could not get into the game and consequently Mary Evans won by two sets to nil. Similarly in the Two Wood Singles, Clare Morgan never allowed her opponent Sam Vale into the game and went on to record a comfortable victory to win the trophy.

In the Mens’ Novices final Steve File built an early advantage which his opponent Dylan Beaumont-Welsh could not reduce. As a consequence of this Steve File went on to a comfortable victory. It was very similar in the Ladies Novices with Sam Vale establishing a good lead over Sue Williams and then building on that lead to win the competition.

In the closely contested Mixed Pairs final Kath Pritchard and Fred Mutimer managed to score shots on the final two ends which decided the game, and the destination of the trophy, against their opponents Sue Williams and Mike Collins. In the Men’s Pairs John Vale and Steve File held a one shot lead after 14 ends but then outscored Anthony Moriarty and Mike Collins to claim the trophy. It was much the same in the final of the Ladies Pairs with Mary Evans and Mary Vale scoring seven shots over the final five ends against Ann Watkins and Sam Vale to clinch the title.

Fred Mutimer built an early six shot lead against Robert Poynter in the game to decide the Veteran’s final. This lead was reduced until scores were level after eighteen ends. Robert Poynter then took control over the next seven ends to take the trophy by six shots. In the final of the Men’s Handicap competition John Whomersley led his opponent Jack Vale by two shots after eight ends. He then increased his lead to ten over the next third of the game before going on to victory in a game that took 24 ends to reach its conclusion.

In the Ladies Championship Mary Evans built an early lead but her Opponent Judy Belli drew level by the eleventh end. It was then” nip and tuck” between the pair until Judy Belli scored four shots on two ends to seal her victory and the title of 2018 Lady Champion.

In the Men’s Championship John Beaton grabbed the initiative from the start to establish a comfortable nine shot lead by the tenth end. His opponent Fred Mutimer could not recover from this and John Beaton went on to win the title of Men’s Champion for 2018.
