ABERGAVENNY Bowls Club ushered in the 2017 season last Saturday with a well attended opening day.
In front of members old and new, a presentation was made to Gethin Hill and Matthew Vale in recognition of their achievement in winning the Open Pairs Welsh Championship last August.
The ceremonial first bowl of the season was then delivered by the club President Robert Poynter. This was followed by a friendly competitive game played between rinks made up by club members. The members then enjoyed a buffet tea kindly provided by the ladies section of the club.
Following an advertising campaign run by the club, there was a tremendous response from people interested in playing the game of bowls.
More than twenty people, the majority of which are new to the game, came along to the opening day last Saturday to register their interest in the sport.
Following this response the club will be holding an introductory night tomorrow (Friday) from 5.30 pm. New players will be able to try the game and club members will be on hand to help with any queries or questions and to give advice, where requested.
All that is needed is a pair of shoes with a smooth sole and without heels. The club can provide bowls for those wishing to come along. If you are not able to attend on Friday and wish to register your interest, please contact Jackie on 01873 853301 or John on 01873 850924
This Saturday the club play a Carruthers Cup game at Pontymister Welfare. This is followed on Sunday with a mixed female/male friendly fixture against Pontyfelin at Avenue Road.
