SOME members sported fancy dress such as a T Rex and a nun for Abergavenny Bowls Club’s last competition of the season, which was the captain's Two Wood Pairs for the Ernie Holton Cup.

The idea came from a recent tour in Jersey where such events are popular, although some members said the joke was on the “dinosaurs” who didn't want to get into the habit of dressing up!

It was a bit of a damp start as play began at 11.30am with the first round of group games.

In the lead at the halfway point of their respective groups were Richard Richards and Mike McGonagall, Peter Steed and Mary Evans, Mandy Harris and Ronnie Harris, and Sue Pritchard and John Vale leading in the last group.

After a break for lunch it was time for the second round and the sun was shining above the green.

The only change of lead in the groups was that Mandy and Ronnie lost the lead in their final game to the club’s newest players Colin Hughes and Richard Murray.

So the semi-final line up was Sue Pritchard and John Vale versus Richard Richards and Mike McGonagall, and Mary Evans and Peter Steed versus Colin Hughes and Richard Murray.

Sue and John won their game and the experience of Mary and Peter saw them win theirs as well.

And the captain's Two Wood Pairs and the Ernie Holton Cup were won by Mary Evans and Peter Steed, but congratulations to Sue and John for getting to the final.

The day was rounded off with a BBQ expertly done by club champion Tom and a few drinks from the bar.

The green will be closing down until April 2027 on Saturday for the usual winter programme of work.

Meanwhile the Indoor Bowls season started on Monday at Blaenau Gwent Indoor Bowls Centre where the club has a good presence.
