GILWERN Bowling Club played their final Monmouthshire BA league game of the season on Saturday, when another promotion-chasing club, Whiteheads, were the visitors to Common Road.

And another very good display by the home team enabled them to win on all four rinks to register a victory by 86 shots to 61.

On the rink of Richard Davis it was very close throughout but the home rink managed to forge ahead over the final three ends to win by 19 shots to 15.

Tony Corfield’s rink dropped seven shots on the 12th end to have a deficit of nine shots at that point in the game.

But remarkably they managed to turn the situation around and scored one shot on the final end to win the game by 21 shots to 20.

And they sealed their victory over the final quarter to win by 21 shots to 13.

Mark Wells’ rink was in command of their game from the start, building a 17 shot lead by the 13th end.

Although their opponents reduced the deficit over the final eight ends, the Gilwern rink managed to secure victory by 26 shots to 14.

On Sunday, three Gilwern members were involved in the finals of the East Monmouthshire Bowling Association competitions, with Bryan Hughes and Bryant Chivers playing in the Senior Pairs final and Mark Wells contesting the Senior Singles final.

Unfortunately, in very close games, they lost out to two Caldicot players in the Pairs and a Monmouth member in the Singles.

Although the league season has come to an end, Gilwern still have their season closing game to be played, when the Ladies take on the Men on Sunday, September 27.
