LAST Saturday Abergavenny’s GBL team were successful on all three rinks against Abertillery winning the game comfortably by 73 shots to 40.

The game on the rink of Ron Smith was close until the final two ends. The Abergavenny rink then managed to score seven shots during these two ends to win the game by 22 shots to 15.

Maurice Padfield’s rink built a 15 shot lead during the third quarter of their game. The Abertillery rink reduced this deficit but the Abergavenny rink held on to win by 27 shots to 19. The result was never in doubt on the rink of Fred Mutimer after building an early six shot lead. They consolidated on this good start to win by 24 shots to six.

On Sunday, Caldicot were the visitors to Avenue Road for an EMBA game. Each club fielded a team made up of players from both their MBA and GBL teams. An excellent game, played in good spirit, was enjoyed by both teams with Abergavenny managing to gain the upper hand by winning on three rinks to win the game by 77 shots to 61.

The rink of Gethin Hill built a 15 shot lead over the first half of the game. In the last quarter, they managed to turn round a determined fight back by the Caldicot rink to register a victory by 24 shots to 12. John Beaton’s rink established a 13 shot lead over the first 12 ends. The Caldicot rink fought back, with some excellent bowling by their skip, but they could not totally reduce their arrears and so were defeated by 20 shots to 11.

Matthew Vale’s rink was six shots behind after eight ends. They then scored ten shots over the next three ends which set them on the road to victory, eventually winning by 23 shots to 18. Unfortunately, the rink of Perry Morgan dropped seven shots on the first two ends. It was difficult to recover from such a start and consequently the rink was eventually defeated by 20 shots to 10.

During the week, Abergavenny Ladies play Croesyceiliog in a league game and a mixed team are also due to play St Martins of Herford in a four rink friendly at Avenue Road. On Saturday Abergavenny have a home fixture against Brynmawr in the MBA.
