OVER the past week Abergavenny Bowls Club commenced their competitive games for the 2016 season when they entertained Crickhowell for an EMBA game and Brynmawr for a GBL fixture.

In the first of these games against Crickhowell, Abergavenny were successful on three of the four rinks to win the game by 69 shots to 61.

The rink of John Vale established a ten shot lead over the first half of the game. The Crickhowell rink then fought back to draw level with the final end to play. The Abergavenny managed to score two shots on the final end to secure victory by 19 shots to 17. Gethin Hill’s rink was in control of their game from the start and continued to build an unassailable lead throughout to win eventually by 23 shots to eight.

Peter Stahl’s rink took a lead of eight shots by the midway point of their game. Despite conceding two counts of four shots in the second half of the game they managed to keep control and win the game by 17 shots to 15.

Unfortunately the rink of John Marsh never got established in their match and was 18 shots behind on the penultimate end. They then managed to score six shots on the final end to lose by 22 shots to 10.

Brynmawr were the visitors to Avenue Road for the first GBL game of the season. Although Abergavenny could win on only one rink, they lost the game by only two shots 57 shots to 55. The only victorious rink was that of Bill Belli. Although conceding four shots on the final end, they won by 19 shots to 16.

John Whomersley’s rink lost when the final bowl of the game by the Brynmawr skip reversed a losing position to win the game by 16 shots to 15. The rink of Fred Mutimer fought back from a ten shot deficit but were still defeated by 25 shots to 21.

Over the coming weekend Aber have a Welsh Cup game against Pontymister Welfare at Avenue Road on Saturday and a GBL fixture at Belle Vue on Sunday.
