IN the past week Abergavenny have played a GBL game, a Ladies friendly and were involved in the EMBA Trophy game at Caldicot.

Belle Vue Park was the opposition for the GBL game at Avenue Road and won comfortably on two rinks and tied the other to win the game by 72 shots to 50.

Maurice Padfield’s rink managed to score six shots on the penultimate end to take a one shot lead. However, their opponents then scored one shot on the final end to enable them to tie the game 20 all. Both the rinks of Fred Mutimer and Mike Collins were behind at the halfway stage of their games. The rink of Mike Collins had a better second half but could not overturn the deficit and was therefore defeated by 30 shots to 15. In the second half of their game, Fred Mutimer’s rink got to within two shots of their opponents but then conceded five shots on the final end to lose by 22 shots to 15.

Abergavenny Ladies welcomed Garndiffaith for a friendly fixture. It was a close game on two of the rinks with each team winning by one shot. However Garndiffaith won by a comfortable margin on the third rink to win the game by 52 shots to 30. Ceri Clark’s rink won by 13 shots to 12. The rink of Sue Williams lost by 13 shots to 12 and Mary Evans’ rink was beaten by an excellent Garndiffaith rink.

Last Friday eight members of Abergavenny Ladies competed in the County Rinks competition at Caldicot. Unfortunately both rinks were unable to progress to the next phase of the competition as they were defeated by rinks from Chepstow and Caerleon. The rink playing Chepstow was defeated comfortably. The rink competing against Caerleon came back from a 15 shot deficit to be defeated by eight shots, having conceded three shots on the final end.

The seven players from Abergavenny, who competed in the finals of the 2018 EMBA competitions, were involved in the annual trophy game at Caldicot last Sunday. This is an event which is played between a team made up by EMBA league winners playing against a team comprising of the finalists of EMBA competitions. Gethin Hill and Sue Williams formed a rink with Peter Bailey and Meryl Slaymaker of Chepstow. This was an historic occasion as it was the first time a mixed team has represented the EMBA. The rink of Gethin Hill was successful in defeating the Caldicot rink by four shots. The other Abergavenny players formed another rink which was skipped by Matthew Vale. They were also victorious forging ahead in the second half of the game to win by five shots. Following the game trophies were presented to Jack Vale who won the Open Singles title and to Gethin Hill and Sue Williams, the victors in the Mixed Pairs competition. Also receiving trophies were John Vale, Matthew Vale, John Marsh and Dewi Williams.

This Saturday Abergavenny will play an EMBA league game at Chepstow.
