Last Saturday Abergavenny Bowls Club played their final competitive game of the season when they travelled to Chepstow to play an EMBA fixture.
In a closely contested game Abergavenny sealed their victory over the final third of the match, winning on three of the four rinks to win the game by 71 shots to 68.
Gethin Hill’s rink was unable to score a shot for six ends and so were nine shots behind with six ends to play. They then scored 13 shots, without reply, to win by 21 shots to 17. The rink of Matthew Vale conceded nine shots over the first four ends. They turned the situation round to draw level after 12 ends and then over the final six ends went on to seal victory by 17 shots to 15.
With the lead frequently changing hands and each team never having more than a three shot advantage, John Beaton’s rink was involved in a close game. The Abergavenny rink managed to secure victory by scoring five shots on the last two ends to win the game by 18 shots to 14. Jack Vale’s rink fought back from an eight shot deficit to get within three shots of their opponents with three ends to play. However, the rink then conceded five shots over the final three ends, and even though they won ten of the 18 ends, they lost the game by 22 shots to 15.
This Saturday the club will hold their finals day when their season long competitions will be decided. The day will begin at 10.30 am with the final of the Men’s Pairs competition and the season will then end with the final of the Men’s Championship.
