IT WAS Club Finals Day at Abergavenny Bowls Club on Sunday with eight matches starting at 10am and finishing at 5.30pm.

The champions and runners-up were: Mixed Pairs Champions - Mary Vale and Tom Cobb, runners-up - Mary Evans and John MacGregor; Novices Champion - Gordon King, runner-up - Mike Hayward; Handicap Champion - Tom Cobb, runner-up - Peter Beynon; Ladies Pairs Champions - Mary Evans and Sue Pritchard, runners-up - Sue Williams and Lesley Radley; Men’s Pairs Champions - John MacGregor and John Woodier, runners-up Gwyn Jones and Steve File; Ladies Champion - Mary Evans, runner-up - Mary Vale. Men’s Champion - Tom Cobb, runner up - Jack Vale.

The week started with bowlers rolling across the Severn Bridge on a day trip to Weston-Super-Mare and a mixed friendly game against Victoria Bowls Club on Sunday (August 16).

The hosts took the five-rink match 100-74, but It proved an enjoyable day out for the visitors.

The Ladies also played their last South Wales and Monmouthshire Ladies League game of the season last week, against Panteg House.

Mary Evans, Val Jones, Lesley Radley and Mandy Harris trailed 19-1 after eight ends, and only won three of the last 10, going down 32-7.

It was a lot closer on Jenni MacGregor, Sue Jewell, Cath Badham and Mary Vale’s rink, with each side getting four singles over the initial eight ends.

Abergavenny then took a 10-7 lead on the 14th end, only for Panteg House to level the score next end and score five shots after that, with Abergavenny finally losing 15-13, and the final match score Abergavenny 20 Panteg House 47.

The Ladies were hosts to Oakdale Welfare on Saturday when they played them in the one -rink Mary Wardle League, and this time ran out winners.

Sue Pritchard, Mary Vale, Lesley Radley and Mary Evans took control after the first end and were 11-1 up after five ends.

Oakdale rallied to make it 11-7 before Abergavenny pulled out to 16-7, 24-9 and 26-11 at the end.

The Monmouthshire BA team went to Oakdale on Saturday for their final game needing to gain as many points as possible to try and avoid relegation.

Rob Poynter, Steve File, Gordon King and Mike McGonagall were level at the sixth, 11th, 15th and 17th ends, but Oakdale had a five-shot lead on the 20th end and Abergavenny could only get a single on the last to lose 20-16.

Rob Pursey, John Newell, Dave Cooper and Mike Hayward trailed 7-4 after seven ends, but took a 13-12 lead on the 14th end, only to concede a six on the 19th end before finally going down 23-15.

On rink 3, Jimmy Harris, Fred Mutimer, Ian McCuish and Peter Steed were 11-4 down after six ends but then won the next 10 ends to have an 18-11 lead.

And securing three singles on three of the last ends, they made the final rink score 21-12.

Only the rink of John Vale, Dave Hill, Courtney Hemmings and Stephen Williams made a good start to lead 8-3 on the seventh end, which they maintained to be 13-6 up at the 13th end.

But Oakdale then took control and won seven of the last eight ends to take the lead and win the rink 20-14.

The final match score was Abergavenny 66. Oakdale 75, with two points for Abergavenny and 12 for Oakdale.
