LAST Saturday Abergavenny suffered a comprehensive defeat to Blackwood by 102 shots to 63.

Abergavenny’s sole successful rink was Matthew Vale’s who won by 24 shots to 19. Anthony Moriarty’s rink was involved in a close game and just lost out to Blackwood by 16 shots to 13.

The other two Abergavenny rinks of Gethin Hill and Keith Richards suffered heavy defeats.

It was better news for the Abergavenny ladies team who travelled to Croesyceiliog for a league game. They managed to win on two rinks, and although losing on the third rink, they won a narrow victory by 50 shots to 49.

Ceri Clark’s rink was three shots behind after ten ends but managed to turn round the situation to win their game by 16 shots to 14. Sian Phillips rink was trailing by six shots at the halfway stage of the game. They reduced their arrears and then scored two shots on the final end to snatch victory by 14 shots to 13. The final Abergavenny rink was five shots behind going into the final end. However they scored three shots on that end to lose by only two shots, 20-22.

In midweek Abergavenny played a five rink mixed friendly fixture at Chepstow. Although the first half of the game was fairly even, Abergavenny proved too strong for Chepstow in the second half and went on to record a comfortable victory. All five Abergavenny rinks, skipped by Mary Evans, Judi Belli, Gethin Hill, John Vale and John Whomersley, ably assisted by their teammates, were successful leading to overall victory by 114 shots to 68. The return fixture at Avenue Road will be played on September 4.

This Saturday Abergavenny play Barry Athletic at Avenue Road in the second round of the Welsh Cup (Carruthers Shield).
