ABERGAVENNY began their competitive season last Saturday with a Carruthers Shield game at Pontymister Welfare.
Unfortunately they could win on one rink only and therefore lost the game by 77 shots to 55.
The one successful rink for Abergavenny was that of John Marsh. They took control of their game from the fifth end, building an eight shot lead by the fifteenth end.
This enabled them to go on to win by 17 shots to 10. The rink of Anthony Moriarty was involved in a very close game. They built a five shot lead by the fourteenth end but the Pontymister Welfare rink then fought back, scoring two shots on the final end to defeat the Abergavenny rink by 17 shots to 16.
Robert Poynter’s rink had a ten shot deficit after the first eight ends. They fought back to reduce this lead to three shots by the sixteenth end. Unfortunately, the Pontymister rink then won four of the last five ends to secure victory by 18 shots to 13. Matthew Vale’s rink could not get into their game after conceding 14 shots in the first six ends. The Pontymister rink then built on their early success to win the game by 32 shots to nine.
This weekend Abergavenny play their second game in the Carruthers against Six Bells at Avenue Road. On Sunday they entertain an EMBA team for the annual EMBA trophy game.
