Abergavenny Bowls Club suffered a disappointing weekend after being defeated in the County Cup by Chepstow on Friday and then losing an MBA game to Abertillery on Saturday.
In the County Cup game at Avenue Road Abergavenny won on one rink, tied on another but were defeated on the two remaining rinks to lose by 76 shots to 62. Matthew Vales’s rink built an early lead and then managed to resist a fight-back by the Chepstow rink to win by 14 shots to 12. The rink of Gethin Hill was involved in a close game which they managed to tie by scoring five shots on the final end, leading to a score of 18 shots each.
Robert Poynter’s rink held a nine shot lead on end eight but then were unable to score for the last eight ends and eventually lost by 20 shots to 16. Peter Stahl’s rink led by five shots early in their game but the Chepstow rink then took control to win by 26 shots to 14.
Against Abertillery, Abergavenny could win on only one rink in their defeat by 120 shots to 56. Although well beaten Abergavenny scored two league points, which is two more than in the same fixture last year. The only victorious rink for Abergavenny was that of Matthew Vale. They fought back from an early seven shot deficit to score four shots on the final end and win their game by 22 shots to 21. The rinks of Robert Poynter, Gethin Hill and Peter Stahl were never able to get into their games and therefore all suffered defeats.
This weekend Abergavenny host Machen in the MBA and welcome Abertillery for a GBL game on Sunday.
