BRYNMAWR bowling sensation Aaron Rees has just been called up to represent his country and play for the Under-18 Indoor Bowls Welsh Team.
The 16-year-old with the sure shot and the steady arm has only been playing indoor bowls for one season and has exceeded everyone's expectations.
Aaron, who is the only Blaenau gwent player to make the squad, attends Brynmawr Foundation School and is so besotted with bowls he has chosen it as one of the sports in his PE GCSE.
Following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, Aaron plays green bowls at Brynmawr Bowls Club, and has already added to his family's rich bowling pedigree by winning the indoor triple's competition held at Abertillery Bowls Centre, as well as the Coaches trophy.
Alongside Ryan Meredith, Aaron also bowled himself to a runner-up spot in the Under-16 Welsh Indoors Pairs Championship.
Quite an achievement when you consider it was the first time that a Blaenau Gwent pair made the semi-finals, never mind the finals of this prestigious competition.
Aaron who turned 16 on April 17 will receive his first cap when he travels with the Welsh squad to the fair 'toon' of Newcastle in October of this year.
Aaron's proud mother, Catherine Rees, told the Chronicle, "Aaron was spotted and asked to attend a Welsh trial in mid-April. He was then asked to attend another trial six days later.
"The results of the Welsh team were to be posted on the Bowling association website on Wednesday, 25.
"Although Aaron played exceptionally well in both trials, he had convinced himself that as this was his first season he would not make the team.
"So when the team was announced you can just imagine how overjoyed we all were."
A delighted Catherine added, "This is a fantastic and well-deserved achievement for Aaron. He enjoys this sport, and although when he first started playing, he did have to put up with a bit of banter from his mates, they now support him all the way.
"He has demonstrated such a fantastic attitude towards bowls and so many people have commented on his natural aptitude and talent for the sport, that we're all convinced he is definitely a player to watch.
"We are all very proud of him and would like to wish him the best of luck for the future."
