IT was a weekend of woe for Abergaveny who lost to a visiting Abercarn on Saturday and their rearranged MBA match against Blackwood on Sunday was cancelled for the second time due to a waterlogged green.
Against Abercarn each of the teams won on two rinks but unfortunately for Abergavenny, the visitors managed to gain an overall aggregate victory by 82 shots to 73.
The successful rinks for Abergavenny were those of Ieuan Jenkins and Gethin Hill.
Ieuan Jenkins rink built an early lead which they consolidated by the fifteenth end. Despite the Abercarn rink then scoring seven shots over the final four ends to reduce the deficit, the Abergavenny rink sealed victory by 16 shots to 15.
The rink of Gethin Hill built a commanding early lead which they extended through the third quarter of the game. They rounded off their victory by scoring nine shots over the final three ends to win by 34 shots to 17.
John Beaton's rink was 15 shots behind at the halfway stage of their game. It was a complete reversal of fortune in the second half when they scored 13 shots whilst conceded only four. However, they could not totally reduce the deficit and lost by 20 shots to 14.
Mathew Vale's rink conceded eight shots on the first three ends. They never recovered from this, winning only five ends, and eventually lost the game by 30 shots to nine.
Abergavenny did not have a league game the previous weekend due to the finals of the MBA competitions being played at RTB in Ebbw Vale.
Club members Gary John, Ieuan Jenkins, Neil Roberts, Keith Richards and Robert Poynter made up the squad that won through to the final of the over 60's rink. Unfortunately they were defeated on the day. However, they still have the opportunity to play in the Welsh finals at Llandrindod Wells as both MBA finalists qualify for this competition.
This weekend the club is involved in an MBA game at RTB and welcome local rivals Bailey Park to Avenue Road in the GBL
