MONMOUTHSHIRE Short Mat Bowls Association held their Autumn Triples Tournament

at Chepstow Leisure Centre late last month.

Twenty teams competed, made up of members from clubs throughout Monmouthshire. All teams had at least three games, it was encouraging to note that Little Mill SMBC had two teams competing as they have not entered the competition before and also there was a touring side from Abergavenny, entering one team. The regular clubs taking part were Usk, Devauden, Magor, Mathern, Mardy and Goytre.

The successful teams getting through to the quarter final were Mathern (1) G.Stayte. Usk 4. Usk (1) B.Abbott. Devauden (1) P. McCarthy. Devauden (2) J.Phillips. Mardy (3) Peter R. Usk (3) P.Hamar. Goytre (2) L.Bruton.

Mathern (1) had an easy win over Usk (4) but the other matches were closely fought. Onto the Semi-finals and Goytre 2 (skip L.Bruton) had a very close match against Usk 1 (skip B.Abbott) winning by two shots, in the other semi-final Mathern 1(G.Stayte) beat Devauden 2 (J.Phillips) by nine shots to five.

The final was between Goytre 2 (L.Bruton) against Mathern 1(G.Stayte), as expected with two experienced teams the competition was fierce but finally Goytre 1 were the winners and became the Champions of the Autumn Triples.

The Chairman of Monmouthshire Short Mat Bowls Association thanked all the players for taking part and also Pearl Gill for organising the raffle. Monmouthshire Short Mat Bowlers will be looking forward to the Spring Triples to be held at the end of March 2013.
