Pentwynmawr Athletic - 2
Blaenavon Blues - 7
BLAENAVON Blues recently travelled to Newbridge to face fellow relegation rivals Pentwynmawr Athletic and pulled a fine result out of the fire.
The hosts started the livelier of the two sides and were unlucky not to take an early lead with Blues keeper Lee Jones made a number of quality saves.
But it was the Blues who should have taken the lead when Dylan Mason fired wide with just the keeper to beat. Soon after Mason fired home to give Blaenavon the advantage and they doubled their lead before half time when the impressive Matthew Burns netted.
The second half saw the Blues in dominant form and opening the home defence up at will, the interplay between teenagers Burns, Mason and winger Illydd Caddick was very impressive as the youngsters grew in confidence.
The Blues soon found themselves three up when Mason got his second and the 16-year-old completed his hat-trick with a 35 yard shot that left the home keeper stranded in the sand covered box. Burns was on the score sheet again soon after when a great back heel by Mason opened up the home defence for Burns to coolly slot the ball home.
The Blues made it 6-0 with an excellent 25 yard free kick from Craig Tanner which left the keeper with no chance, before making it 7-0 when man of the match Mason went through on goal and finished with ease.
The home side managed to get two consolation goals from some slack Blues defending but the game was over as a contest as the Blues picked up a valuable three points that moves them eight points clear of bottom placed Pentwynmawr.
Last Wednesday saw the club's third team progress to the final of the Benevolent cup final after a 3-1 win over Pontypool Town. The Blues scorers were Mike Marsden, Joe Prince and player manager Richard Gulliford. The third team are also through to the semi finals of the Open cup and the Ashbourne Givova UK Cup.
This weekend the Blues welcome Panteg to the Memorial ground for a Torfaen derby. Kick off is at 3pm.
