IF you blink you'll miss them, but the Blaenafon Barracudas are currently on our television screens every day - you just need some pretty sharp eyes to spot them.

Many of you will no doubt have seen the latest Nationwide Building Society advert that states "It's not money that makes the world go around, it's people".

Accompanied by the dulcet tones of Aussie songbird Kylie Minouge, flashing images of people from all walks of life, going about their everyday lives are shown. And then lo and behold, some of the Barracudas are seen playing cricket on Barry Island beach.

"The swimmers are thrilled to be on TV everyday," explained Barracudas head coach Kevin Rogers. "The filming happened earlier in the year after a gala in Barry. The swimmers went down on the beach to do some land training and conditioning work, with the younger Barracudas having a game of quick cricket."

Kevin added, "The film crew spotted them and were allowed to take the shots while the children played.

"They told us what they were planning for the advert, which sounded interesting. They encouraged the children to run around and create as much movement as possible."

The Barracudas had to wait to find out if the footage was used, and were as pleased as pie when the advert was finally launched on the small screens.

Since then, the Barracudas have had a busy few months, and are looking forward to their Annual Club Championships on November 22 at Pontypool Active Learning Centre.

"We are looking for race sponsors to help cover the costs of the event. I am hoping that the Nationwide might be prepared to sponsor us giving our support for them" said Kevin optimistically.

Local businesses and benefactors are also encouraged to support the event and can contact Kevin on [email protected]">[email protected] if they would like to support the club.
