ABERGAVENNY squash club's 'A' team returned to winning ways at the end of March, winning five matches to nil against Rhiwbina 'B'. Only one match proved to be difficult, as Steve Williams had to come back from 2-0 down to win the last three sets. The team moves back into fourth place.
Jethro Binns (1) won 3-0; Lewys Hurst (2) won 3-0; Steve Williams (3) won 3-2; Chris Hill (4) won 3-0; Gareth Hughes-Jones (5) won 3-0.
At the beginning of April, the 'A' team lost a tight match by three matches to two to Cardiff 'A'. Both Lewys Hurst and Chris Hill won comfortably, and the tie hinged on the final match, with Gareth Hughes-Jones losing the fifth set by 12-10. The team retains fourth spot in the table, and have a real chance of finishing in third place, as they are only seven points behind, and their remaining matches are against sides below them.
Jethro Binns (1) lost 3-0; Lewys Hurst (2) won 3-0; Steve Williams (3) lost 3-0; Chris Hill (4) won 3-0; Gareth Hughes-Jones (5) lost 3-2. In the tail-end of March, the 'B' team beat the bottom side Abercynon 'A' by four matches to one. The only disappointment was the defeat of the captain, Chris Phelps, but his four companions all won their matches with a total loss of only two sets. Mike Logan (1) won 3-0; Gary Lawrence (2) won 3-0; Chris Phelps (3) lost 3-0; Ellis Lawrence (4) won 3-1; Mitchell Lawrence (5) won 3-1.
There was a disappointing result in the 'B' team's next match, when they lost to a Barry Leisure 'A' side just below them in the league by four matches to one. The only victory was achieved by Gary Lawrence, who won a very tight match by 17-16 in the fifth set. Elsewhere, only captain Chris Phelps recorded any points. The team retain their fifth position, but are only now one point above their victors, and have a difficult end to the season with matches against the two Newport sides at the top of the league. Mike Logan (1) lost 3-0; Gary Lawrence (2) won 3-2; Chris Phelps (3) lost 3-2; Ellis Lawrence (4) lost 3-0; Mitchell Lawrence (5) lost 3-0.
Also in March the 'C' team lost by five matches to nil against Caldicot 'A'. Once more, they fielded a weakened side, with three players again unavailable. However, the team spirit remains undiminished, which was demonstrated by Peter Steed playing with a leg injury, and Peter Sturgess returning from semi-retirement to play only his second game since September.
Peter Steed (1) lost 3-1; Simon Cave (2) lost 3-0; Matthew Thomas (3) lost 3-1; Peter Sturgess (4) lost 3-0; Mark Nicholls (5) lost 3-0.
In the relegation battle, the 'C' team lost a very tight match to their close rivals Newport 'G' by three matches to two. The tie was decided in the final match, where, despite suffering from a heavy cold, Tim Woodier lost a fine match in the fifth set. This proved very frustrating for Tim, as he had five match points in the fourth set. Both players were applauded from the court at the end of the match, which is highly unusual, but thoroughly deserved in this case! Tim Woodier (1) lost 3-2; Peter Steed (1) won 3-0; Simon Cave (2) won 3-1; Matthew Thomas (3) lost 3-1; Marc Winchester (5) lost 3-0.
