Abertillery RFC - 10

Abertillery were the visitors to Bailey Park for Aber’s first home game of the season which ended in a dispiriting defeat.

With Wil Williams unavailable, the only change to the Abergavenny side from the previous week, was Nathan Byrne coming in on the wing.

The visitors started the game strongly putting together numerous phases and applying the pressure to take the lead with a penalty goal.

This was the wake-up call the clarets needed and putting the squeeze on the Abertillery eight, the Aber pack were awarded a penalty which fullback Matthew Edwards kicked to level the scores.

Abertillery worked their way back into the game and were rewarded with two further penalty goals and a superb team try.

Following a period of sustained pressure with several close range scrums and lineouts stopped illegally, Aber were awarded a penalty try, converted by Matthew Sevenoaks, to make it 10-14 at half time

Genni started the second half with their pack becoming more dominant and putting the home side into good attacking positions, but silly mistakes and bad decision making enabled the away team to keep their line intact.

Alternately when the Abertillery’s backs saw an opportunity to attack, they did so with precision to score two further excellent tries, both converted along with a penalty to give Abertillery a 31-10 lead.

The home side refused to surrender and continued to the attack the visitor’s line but once again small errors of judgement stopped them from adding any further scores.

During the game there was a nasty injury to second row Mathew Price which needed hospital treatment. All at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

On a positive side the reopening of the newly refurbished function room was a great success and will be open in the coming weeks for many of the World Cup fixtures. Next week Abergavenny first team are away to Pill Harriers and the Quins are home to Chepstow.
