Govilon - 3
Blaenavon Blues - 2
GOVILON came out on top in their fierce and frantic local derby against the Blues but had to wait until deep into the second half before they were sure of victory.
Blues got off to a great start with debutant Jack Moore opening the scoring with a well taken goal.
Good work by Lee Penry won a corner for the Blues and defender Mathew Cox made good contact with the corner kick but narrowly headed over.
After a period of Govilon pressure, Cox did well to make a clearance off his own goal line.
Thirty minutes in Govilon's Neville Harris forced Blues keeper Lee Jones to make a good save at his near post. A great ball from Marc Browning put Moore through, but a desperate defender stopped Moore by handling the ball. From the free kick Steve White hit the bar with the Govilon keeper beaten.
Govilon equalised with a fine effort from Ben Bannon who thumped the ball into the roof of the net following a goal-line scramble.
Govilon's Jon Morgan was taken to hospital with a serious head injury just before half time.
Govilon were more assertive in the second half. Dean Morgan grazed the post ten minutes in and Craig Norman hammered the ball against the bar on the hour. Five minutes later his goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Blaenavon's Steve White as Govilon continued to turn the screw.
With ten minutes remaining Dean Morgan's persistence in chasing the ball paid off when he squared to Neville Harris who made no mistake in beating Lee Jones in Blaenavon's goal.
With Govilon looking to make the game safe Harris hit the post five minutes later and then delivered a rousing finale by beating Jones again to give his side a two goal lead.
In the closing minutes Blues were awarded a penalty which White calmly slotted home to make the final score 3-2 to Govilon.
This weekend the Blues welcome Abertillery Excelsior's to the Memorial ground as they attempt to drag themselves away from the relegation zone. Meanwhile Govilon travel to Fairfield Utd. Kick off for both games is 3pm.

ELSEWHERE in Gwent County Division Three the Abergavenny Thursdays returned to Pen-y-Pound last Saturday and in a very entertaining game beat the visitors 2-0, with goals in each half scored by Leon Gilcrist.
The first being a cheeky little lob over the oncoming keeper and a first class header in the second half to seal the points. The Thursdays are at home this Saturday when they entertain Thornwell.
