Abergavenny Squash Club’s ‘E’ team entertained the bottom side within the division, Monmouth ‘E’ and ran out easy winners by four matches to one. Chris Owens and Simon Cave had comfortable victories, but Chris Carver and Dean Jackson-Johns had to work hard, both coming back from two sets down to win 3-2. The team rise one place into fourth position.

By contrast, on the following night, the ‘D’ team travelled to the top side within the division, Monmouth ‘D’ and were well beaten 5-0. Simon Cave, who was playing for the team for the first time this season, managed to gain a point for the side, and Peter Steed came extremely close, just losing 17-14 in the fifth set. The team remain in third place.

The ‘C’ team travelled to Cardiff, and lost a tight match to the side currently bottom of the league. Mike Logan and Mathew Pomfret played well, but this was a disappointing loss for the side who remain in fifth spot.

On the same night, the ‘B’ team entertained Cardiff University’s top side hell bent on promotion, and were well beaten 5-0. Mitchell Lawrence fought hard, losing all three sets by the smallest of margins, and unfortunately, the side lost the services of his brother, Ellis, early in the second set due to injury. The team now drop into the relegation zone at seventh place.

Finally, the ‘A’ team had a victory against David Lloyd Cardiff ‘A’, and remain the only side in the division with an unbeaten record. Given that their number one player was unavailable for the match, this was a fine win, which was inspired by captain Chris Hill, who won 3-0. However, the current champions also won, so they have closed the gap on our side to just five points. The match between these two teams in early March would appear to be the title decider!

Finally, on Thursday, the ‘A’ team had yet another victory, and remain the only side in the division with an unbeaten record. Given that their number one player was unavailable for the match, this was a fine win, which was inspired by captain Chris Hill, who won 3-0. However, the current champions also won, so they have closed the gap on our side to just five points. The match between these two teams in early March would appear to be the title decider!
