Abergavenny Squash Club’s ‘C’ team unfortunately lost their match against Penybont 4-1, which effectively decided the second promotion place. Only the Welsh Master, Peter Steed, was able to win his match. The last match of the season will be against the newly-crowned champions.

On the same night, the ‘B’ team side, who were once again lacking key players, were comprehensively defeated by the league leaders and probable champions, Barry Leisure, by five matches to nil. Mathematically, they could escape relegation, but this is extremely unlikely.

The ‘D’ and ‘E’ teams faced each other again, with the ‘D’ team winning comfortably 5-0. The highlight of the evening was the close match between Peter Sturgess and Owain Davies, which the latter won, coming back from 2-0 down to triumph 3-2 as his opponent effectively vanished. The ‘D’ team now looks certain to finish second, with the ‘E’ team third.

The ‘A’ team lost a tight match to one of the top two teams, St Mellons ‘A’ by three matches to two. The match hinged on Chris Hill’s performance, but he was just edged out in the fifth set. All is now set for next week’s relegation match against Newport ‘B’, which will decide the fate of both sides.
