USK'S Abi Welsford will captain the Wales women's hockey side at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Swansea City player and former Usk primary school pupil has represented her country at every level in Hockey, starting as a 15-year-old in the U16s. Abi, who now lives in Cardiff and teaches at Bridgend's Bryn Teg comprehensive school made her senior debut in the Celtic Cup in 2003. She represented Wales at the Dehli Commonwealth Games in 2010, and scored a goal against New Zealand, which Abi describes as her, "Most memorable achievement to date." Abi was made captain in 2013 and led the team through a successful European Championship (tier three) campaign where Wales won every match, securing the gold medal and getting promoted to tier two. Abi has been selected to captain the Wales hockey team by coach Amanda Partington and will helm a 16-strong squad of both veteran and novice players. Joining Abi in the team is is Birmingham University defender Xenna Hughes, daughter of former Wales and Manchester United footballer, Mark Hughes. Wales coach Amanda Partington said, "Great credit must be given to every player involved in the performance training squad (PTS) for raising standards this year and making this final selection for the Commonwealth Games incredibly hard. I wish to congratulate all 16 players on their selection and look forward to watching their development on such a high class stage in Glasgow." Abi, whose sporting hero is David Beckham was part of the Wales Commonwealth Games team who finished eighth following a penalty defeat by Scotland four years ago. Alongside, Abi, vice-captain Leah Wilkinson, defender Kat Budd, midfielder Alys Brooks and forward Emma Batten, will all be making the journey to Glasgow as a Commonwealth veteran. Abi, whose favourite quote is, 'The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary', explained, "It's a great honour to lead the Wales women's hockey team at Commonwealth games. It's a new squad with quite a lot of younger players coming through. It's a bit different being one of the older players, but hopefully I can help them, using my experience to good effect."
