Abergavenny RFC - 74
Tredegar RFC - 10
WITH bad weather making the Tredegar pitch unplayable this fixture was reversed and Tredegar visited Bailey Park on Saturday for a match they'd probably like to forget.
Abergavenny fielded a much changed side from the team that beat Brynmawr. Rob Lothian and Ieuan James returned to the front row, Luke Williams came in to partner Dan Horler in the second row, Ted Williams returned at open side and in the backs Rob Morgan and Matthew Edwards slotted in at centre and full back respectively.
Tredegar have not been having the best of seasons and have had trouble fulfilling some of their fixtures, but for the first ten minutes of this match they held their own with an Abergavenny side who seemed determined to play open attacking rugby.
Eventually the stalemate was broken when Dan Horler scored a try under the post converted by Rhodri Webster. Tredegar did claw back three points through a penalty goal but the home side were soon back on the attack again with further first half tries scored by Mark Squirrel, Rhob Connick, Josh Hitchman, and a second try from Dan Horler, leaving the score 33-3 at half time.
Abergavenny continued to play attractive rugby and Dan Dunmore scored the first try of the second half. Early in the second half Abergavenny's coaches introduced all their substitutes which meant a first team debut for young prop Fred Pursey who even though Tredegar went passive in the scrummages acquitted himself well.
Further tries were scored in the second half by Ted Williams (2) Wil Williams, Dan Smith and Dan Dunmore. To be fair to the tenacious Tredegar side, they never gave up and scored a consolation try to leave the final score 74-10.
Abergavenny Quins entertained West Mon Old Boys in a highly entertaining game with a final score of 44-34 to Abergavenny. Young second row Ellis Jones scored two tries and was named unofficially as man of the match.
On Saturday Abergavenny first team entertain Pontypool United, the Quins are at home to Gwernyfydd and the youth are entertaining RTB up on the school pitch. All support for these games would be greatly appreciated by the club.
Prior to that you can enjoy a drink and a chat in the clubhouse this Friday, as they throw open their doors for the Wales V England showdown.
