Pill Harriers - 12

Abergavenny travelled to Pill Harriers on Saturday to a ground where in recent years they had found it very hard to get a result. However on this occasion due to a great effort from all 20 players and coaching staff, they came away with superb 15-12 victory.

Abergavenny's pack saw the return of Ryan Morgan and Gareth Williams to join Owen Staphnil in the front row. Dan Morris and Dan Holler were in the second row with Mark Squirrel, Josh Davies and Ted Williams forming the back row.

Lewys Evans and Rhodri Webster continued at half backs, Gareth Beavan returned to the side to partner the ever present Dan Smith and the back three consisted of Wil Williams, Dan Dunmore and Ieuan Mainwaring.

Initially the juggernaut Pill pack kept possession and denied Aber the opportunity to exploit the strong wind but a very good kick ahead by Dan Dunmore and some good pressuring work by Ieuan Mainwaring allowed Dan Dunmore to pounce on a loose ball to score under the posts. Converted by Lewys Evans, 7 -0.

From the restart Pill took advantage of the Clarets' lack in concentration and were give a scrum on the Abergavenny 22. The visitors were penalised and Pill opted for a line out. Their impressive driving maul drove over the line with ease to score a converted try, 7-7.

In the second half, from a scrum deep in their own half, Abergavenny's backs broke out and full back Will Williams scored an unconverted try.

Pill's replacement outside half now began to use the wind to peg the clarets back into the corners. From one such kick Pill won the resulting lineout and once again scored a try from a driving maul to level the scores, 12-12.

Abergavenny's coaches flooded the field with replacements, Rob Connick, Ieuan James and Rob Lothian. Josh Hitchman returned for his first game of the season and Rob Morgan and this seemed to give Abergavenny more impetus.

Abergavenny began to pressurise the Pill line and with five minutes to go were awarded a penalty for offside, which was kicked by captain Rhodri Webster to give Abergavenny a 15-12 lead. Abergavenny tackled tirelessly for the last five minutes with Josh Davies and Dan Smith both outstanding to hold on for a very important victory.

Abergavenny Harlequins entertained Garndiffaith seconds at Bailey Park on Saturday, and came out on top 45-22 in a highly entertaining game. The youth were also at home to Aberdare and won 7-0 to give Abergavenny a superb hat-trick of wins.
