Croesyceiliog RFC - 0

Abergavenny RFC - 39

ABERGAVENNY's first 15 returned to league action last weekend and gave Croesyceiliog an absolute battering.

The clarets were strengthened with the return of experienced players Ryan Williams, Tom Rees, Rhys Willard, Frank James and Stuart Davies giving the side a much more balanced look about it.

The game was played in atrocious conditions and Aber started playing up the slope with a howling gale at their backs. Croesy were put under a great deal of pressure right from the start with outside half Rhodri Webster pinning the Cockerels back in their 22 at every opportunity.

Aber's pack was producing good quick ball and after a sustained attack Will Williams was put clear on the right wing and once again he did not disappoint to scorch over to score the opening try, Lewis Evans converted, and kicked a penalty soon after to give Aber a 10 – 0 lead.

Abergavenny continued to control the game with the front row of Ryan Morgan, Luigi O'Campo and Frank James giving their opponents a torrid time up front. Although the conditions were horrific for playing flowing rugby Aber moved the ball at every opportunity with backs and forwards handling to put Will Williams over for his second try.

From the restart Rhodri Webster put in an audacious chip which was regathered by Stuart Davies on the half way line who beat three defenders to score under the posts, converted by Lewis Evans to give the claret and ambers a 22-0 lead at half time.

Croesy started the second half with the elements in their favour and from the start put Abergavenny under some stern pressure, but unlike the Pill game where Aber leaked points in the second half, Aber's defence held firm.

With the back row of Rees, Cornock and Buck defending stoutly the second row of Rhys Willard and CJ Woodhouse putting in some terrific tackles, the tide began to turn.

From a loose kick out of defence CJ Wodhouse carried the ball back at Croesy like a charging rhino, leaving tacklers in his wake and setting up possession for the backs to move the ball to left wing Jack Bruten who ran 40 metres and beat three defenders to score in the corner.

Aber were now in total control and any Croesy attack were snuffled out by resolute Aber tackling with centre Gareth Beavan and fullback Ryan Williams prominent in this facet of play.

Abergavenny's fifth try was scored by Will Williams who fielded a speculative kick out of defence and with some superb foot work and some electric acceleration beat five or six defenders to score under the post for his hat trick, converted by Lewis Evans. Stuart Davies rounded off the scoring with an unconverted try to give Aber the victory.

Abergavenny sponsors Sure Homes voted CJ Woodhouse man of the match for his aggressive ball carrying and his destructive chop tackling. Aber take a break now for the autumn internationals but resume league action on November 23 away to Blaenavon.
