Abergavenny Squash Club’s ‘B’ team clinched promotion with an emphatic 5-0 win against one of the two bottom sides in the division.
Fittingly, this was clinched by Abergavenny’s newest favourite son, Anthony Squire, who, fresh from his exploits at the Principality Stadium where he scored the winning try against Oakdale, now proceeded to win the match which led to promotion!
The significance of this victory for the club cannot be understated, as, for the first time in its history, it has now two teams in the top two divisions of South Wales, and is the leading club that plays its squash at leisure centres. This is a remarkable achievement given that, as little as ten years ago, the club only had two teams, whereas now it has five.
The ‘B’ team’s season finally came to an end on with another comprehensive win by five matches to nil against Cardiff side, The Vale. The highlight of the match was Ellis Lawrence’s victory against a lively opponent, with Ellis winning 15-14 in the fifth set. This performance was typical of Ellis’s approach to the entire season, given that he won “ugly”! Overall, mention must be made of the various team members’ records for the season: John Proctor, who won 11 from 14 matches; Anthony Squire, who won 11 from 13; Ellis himself, who won 14 from 15; and finally, Gareth Hughes-Jones, who won all of his 15 matches. Roll on next season when the team will make its debut in the Premier League!
