LAST Saturday Abergavenny played at Crosskeys in an MBA game. Unfortunately they were defeated on all four rinks, losing the game by 112 shots to 47.

The only rink on which the game was close was that of Gethin Hill. Although the Crosskeys rink built a substantial ten shot lead during the first third of the game, this was gradually reduced until scores were level by the sixteenth end. After a very closely contested last five ends, the game was decided on the last end with the Crosskeys rink winning an enjoyable, closely contested game by 19 shots to 16.

On the other rinks the Crosskeys team took the initiative to build early leads. They never looked like relinquishing their leads and went on to comfortable wins on all three rinks. Rink scores were Keith Richards 14-30, John Beaton 7-36 and Jay Griffiths 10-27.

The previous weekend, Abergavenny had to rearrange their MBA fixture with Beaufort from Saturday to Sunday. This was due to their opponents continued involvement in the Carruthers Cup on the Saturday. In much better weather for bowls both teams won on two rinks. However Beaufort held the upper hand, scoring an overall victory by 82 shots to 54.

The two successful rinks for Abergavenny were those of Keith Richards and Gethin Hill. Keith Richards' rink held a ten shot lead after five ends. This lead was reduced to two shots by end eleven. The Abergavenny rink then regained control by scoring fifteen shots and conceding only two to win their game by 26 shots to 12.

The rink of Gethin Hill was involved in a very tight low scoring game. The Beaufort rink built a four shot lead after seven ends which the Abergavenny rink managed to reduce and draw level by the fifteenth end. They then gained the upper hand over the last six ends to win by 14 shots to 12.

On Mathew Vale's rink Beaufort built a seven shot lead by the ninth end. Although the game was close thereafter, the Abergavenny rink could not reduce the deficit and lost by 19 shots to 10. Jay Griffiths' rink went ten shots down on the first three ends. This set the trend for the afternoon and the Abergavenny rink could not get a foothold in the game, losing by 39 shots to eight.

This Saturday Pontymister Athletic are the visitors to Abergavenny for an MBA game. On Sunday the Nevill Ladies section of the club are hosting a Welsh Ladies Competition at Avenue Road.
